## Why a short note matters

People who write thank-you letters consistently underestimate their effect. In experiments by Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley, writers [underestimated how surprised and positive recipients would feel](https://www.chicagobooth.edu/media-relations-and-communications/press-releases/expressing-your-gratitude-is-more-powerful-than-you-think) and overestimated how awkward the recipients would find it. Thanks also travels: in studies by Adam Grant and Francesca Gino, [66% of people who had been thanked went on to help a second person, compared with 32% of those who hadn’t been](https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2013/03/the-power-of-thanks/).

## The structure the generator follows

1. **Greeting**, using the name you’d use in person. The generator adjusts it to the relationship and tone.
2. **Specific thanks** that names the gift or kindness.
3. **Why it matters**: how you’ll use it or what it meant. This is the sentence only you can write.
4. **A look back or ahead**: the occasion, a memory, the next time you’ll meet.
5. **Thanks again and your name.**

The wording comes from the templates in our guide on [how to write a thank-you note](https://courteo.us/thank-you-notes/), where you’ll also find when a note is expected and whether paper or email is better.

### Do

- Fill in every bracket with a real detail
- Copy it onto a card by hand for gifts and hospitality
- Keep it short: three to five sentences

### Don’t

- Mention the amount of a cash gift
- Send the same note to every guest
- Add an unrelated request or news

> **After a wedding or a big birthday**

> Log each gift as it arrives (who, what, when) so every note can be specific. [Giftwise, a free gift idea tracker](https://allthingsn.com/apps/giftwise/), also remembers what you gave and who you thanked. For gift cards you received, [Cardkeep](https://allthingsn.com/apps/cardkeep/) tracks balances so a kind gift doesn’t expire in a drawer.

Choosing a gift yourself? Read our [gift etiquette guide](https://courteo.us/gift-etiquette/). Writing to someone who is grieving? See [condolence etiquette](https://courteo.us/condolence-etiquette/) for wording that helps.
